Simply Synonyms Privacy Policy

Revised November 29, 2020
This policy does not apply to any Simply Synonyms versions before v0.3.0.
In short: We respect your privacy. We do not sell any of your personal information to third parties. We only store and process data required for the core functionality of the Extension and any additional features you have enabled. If you have any questions or concerns about our policy, or our practices with regards to your personal information, please contact us at privacy@synonyms.bweb.app.

This document details what data we collect from you when you use our Extension and Website, and how and why we use it. Throughout this policy, "Extension" refers exclusively to the Simply Synonyms Chrome Extension and "Website" refers exclusively to this website.

1. What data do we collect, and why?

Personal information obtained from your Google account
  • If you choose to sign in to the Extension using your Google account, Google may provide us with some of your information, with your permission, specifically your email and profile information (such as your name and profile picture). You can stop sharing that information with us at any time by removing Simply Synonyms' access to your Google account.
Usage data
  • If you choose to sign in to the Extension we may collect various usage statistics from you, such as the number of synonyms you search for each week and year, and/or the most frequently searched for synonyms. This is used to provide additional functionality to you, such as an optional weekly email that includes (some of) the aforementioned statistics.

  • In the future, we may also use this data for training machine learning algorithms, generating personalized synonym suggestions, and/or other upcoming functionality.

  • We may also use this data in aggregate for the purpose of gaining insight and improving our Extension. However, all data used in this manner or for other analytics purposes is completely anonymized, meaning we don't associate or include any personally identifying information that could be correlated to your account.

  • We will never share or sell this data to a third party, and we do not use it for any purposes not listed in this policy. We do not use it for targeted advertising.

Automatically collected information and logging
  • When you perform an action using the Extension, such as double clicking a word to access synonym information, your browser sends a request to our servers to fetch the request data. We may log request details such as your IP address and user-agent string. This is used solely for functionality, security, and to prevent abuse of our systems.

  • We collect information about our users in general on our Website and in our Extension, such as the number of times the Extension or Website is opened per month. However, none of this data is associated or stored with user-identifiable information.

2. How do we use your personal information?

We use the personal information we collect or receive exclusively:

  • To provide functionality within our Extension.
  • To provide and administer our Website and Extension, authenticate users for security purposes, provide personalized user features and access, display user content when you use the Extension, develop new features, and improve the features, algorithms, and usability of our Website and Extension.
  • To send administrative information to you. We may use your name and email to send you information about your account and/or information about changes to our terms, conditions, and policies.
  • To send informational emails, such as our weekly mailing containing your usage stats, the "Synonyms of the Week", occasional promotional content, feedback requests, and more. You always have the option to opt-out from these emails with the unsubscribe button in the footer of each email.
  • To securely collect synonym statistics and usage data for the purpose of providing additional Extension functionality.
  • To secure, protect, and prevent misuse of our Extension.
  • To offer support to users. We may use your information to respond to your inquiries and solve any potential issues you might have with the use of our Extension.
  • To facilitate the collection of aggregate, anonymized and non-personal statistics and usage data for insight, analytics and security purposes.
  • For compliance with any legal obligations.

3. Why does the Extension require access to my data on the websites I visit?

The Extension requires permission to access and change data on all websites, as well as permission to interact with tabs. These permissions only enable core functionality.

When you load a web page, the Extension injects an initially hidden popup into the page along with an event listener that waits for you to double click any word on the page, which triggers a script that finds which word you selected and sends it to our servers (along with an ID token if you are signed into the Extension); where our servers process the selected word and return synonym data to the Extension.

We do not and will never collect your browsing history, tab information, or website usage, and will not interfere with your tabs and web browsing in a malicious manner.

If you have concerns about how the Extension works, you may view the full source code for the Extension here.

4. Vendors and sub-processors

Your data may pass through several third party vendors and service providers who provide services for us and require access to your information on our behalf. Examples include server hosting services and email delivery. Unless described in this Policy, we do not share, sell, rent or trade any of your information with third parties for their promotional purposes. This table provides a list of the major vendors and sub-processors that power our Extension:

Google Firebase provides hosting for our API, which your browser sends a request to in order to look up synonyms, etc. Google Firebase also provides identity and authentication tools. We store and process your information using Google Cloud Platform and Firebase in accordance with the policies listed in this document; however, if you do not sign in to the Extension, we will not store any of your personal information other than temporary request logs. For technical specifications on Firebase privacy, please see here. Google Cloud also hosts this Website and may collect logs containing your IP address and user-agent string, etc. for security purposes.

Simple AnalyticsTo get critical information about the behavior of our Extension's users and Website's visitors, we use Simple Analytics. This analytics software gives us insight about our users and visitors only in general, but not about individuals by itself, as it does not track users or visitors and does not store any personal identifiable information.

5. How do we keep your information safe?

We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process, including data encryption and HTTPS. However, please also remember that we cannot guarantee that the internet itself is 100% secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our cloud infrastructure is at your own risk.

6. What are your privacy rights?

If you do not agree with our processing of your data as described in this policy, you have the right to not use our services.

We will delete your data from our database within 30 days after you request account deletion. However, some of your data might remain present for up to 180 days in database backups. Additionally, we may not delete anonymized usage and synonym data collected during the time when you had an account with us.

Please note that uninstalling the Extension will not automatically delete your account. If you would like to request full account deletion please contact us.
